Volunteers are an important part of SCAR. They play a role in every aspect of the organization, including the daily care of the cats in the shelter.
Every morning starting at about 9 am volunteers clean the cat rooms, changing food and water dishes, switching out dirty towels and cat beds for fresh ones, and washing the cages, condos, and floors. They also get some socialization time in with the cats as they make sure everything is in order before we open to the public for the day.
In the afternoons from about 2:30 to 4, volunteers do the feeding, topping off fresh water, scooping litter boxes, sweeping the floor, and putting everything away for the evening. In between shifts there’s always laundry and dishes to do, supporting whoever is manning the office while the public visits.
These daily shifts mean that we rotate through approximately 30 volunteers every month for cat care. And yet we still find ourselves short-handed, especially during the summer. If you’re over the age of 16, are physically capable of bending down, and can dedicate a couple hours once a week, stop by the shelter office and fill out a volunteer application (or download it here and drop it off). The cats will appreciate it.
